FELLOWSHIP

If you are as lucky as I am, you have a crew……here is mine:
(pictured: Brian, Brian, Jesse, me, and Mike after one of the best sessions ever)

It has been a long time since we all surfed together…..work ,weather, and busy schedules tend to get in the way.  It sucks.

At its best, stoke and fellowship go together…..what is better than firing down a glassy line and hearing a familiar voice hooting and hollering in the distance?  Nothing.

When its been too long, I like to watch this clip from the 1970 surf classic “Big Wednesday”, a wonderful rendering of said fellowship. Man, it makes me feel so much better.

And here is one of my very good days, that would not have been nearly as good, if Mike and Jesse didn’t come along.

Is there a Ding Doctor in the house?

I tend to fix my own dings, unless I get twenty at the same time.

My beloved triple stringer hull has been made whole after the ocean reminded me who is in charge.

LEGENDS OF SURFBOARD SHAPING

I just got my favorite surfboard back from the ding doctor after an extended hospital stay….it was ugly, but more on that later.

Having shaped a few boards in my time, I have the utmost respect for the artists who have that certain touch with foam and glass….especially those before the days when machines did most (if not all) the work.

LIGHT SIDE OF THE LENS

If Mickey Smith is on the dark side of the lens, then Chris Bryan must be on the light side…….after watching his highlight reel my eyes burn as if I’d been staring at the sun.
